I used to be a morning person but then I started doing night work and finishing at 2am. However if you wake up at 5am or 11am it's important to start your day off right. Here are 7 important things to do every morning before you do anything else. And the truth is you probably know these already. But the reward of doing them is worth so much more than the procrastination you feel otherwise. So here's the challenge. Do these 7 things for 7 days and try to tell me it doesn't make a difference.
1. Drink 2 glasses of water
We all know this. Drinking water first thing in the morning will hydrate you, energize you, boost your metabolism and get everything moving. It can help with weight loss and detoxify you. It will also keep your skin healthy and strengthen your immune system. I like to keep a 600ml bottle of spring water next to my bed, that way it's the first thing I grab in the morning. I wait at least half an hour after drinking it until I have breakfast as the water has a better effect of detoxifying while you have an empty stomach.
2. Read Something
I personally hate reading. For me studying Law for 5 years straight gave me enough reading for a life time. But I am a believer in all the benefits that reading can do for you. Basically it keeps your brain learning. It's good to learn something every day no matter how small. And in the early hours of your day it's best to keep yourself away from technology. For me, I set a minimum at 2 pages every day. It can be whatever. And this goal is more than obtainable for me. Most days I don't go too far over. But it wakes up your mind.
3. Meditation
There are so many benefits to Meditation. It allows you to open your mind to the elements around you, tune into yourself and allow yourself to feel. Meditation allows you to breathe, to feel the air move around you, to taste, smell, feel, hear and see what your day will hold. It's the calm before the storm that we all need. Having some time every day to just breathe, even if it's only for 10 minutes, will allow you to make the most of every day. And to forgive yesterday of its troubles.
4. Stretch your muscles
You've just been asleep. So relieve those muscles. Give them a nice stretch. This also improves flexibility and will help prevent any sore aches during your day. It also helps reduce headache pain.
5. Catch up on the News
This will ensure you're not clueless about current events and you won't be left standing awkward in a conversation. It's good to know what's going on in your community generally. And it could be just the conversation starter you've been looking for.
6. Pause to be Grateful
Even when life sucks, there's always something to be grateful for. When you can realise it and name it. Then your day is automatically more positive. This will put you in a good mindset to start the rest of your day.
7. Love Someone
There is so much pain in the world right now and often we get so caught up in our own frustrations that we don't stop to think about how we can be helping. Some days we feel on top of the world and others we could stay in bed all day. But this step can be as easy as sending one text. It can be as big or small as you feel you can give, and it can be to anyone. It could be stopping for someone at the side of the road to help with a jump start, or it could be taking time out of your day to call a friend who's struggling. No matter how big or small, it will help. You can create a ripple effect in someone else's day.
